Today’s page is a recreation of JJ Audubon’s Birds of America plate #62, of the passenger pigeon- an artist who’s ugly truth of character is disguised in a legacy of art and conservation.

I’ve grown up adoring the ‘naturalist’ sort of look showcased in Birds of America, though anymore the art style itself carries a weight… so often the images remain as the last traces of bygone species, the association is hard to break in my mind. I feel the reference to Audubon’s work makes for a thematic turning point- despite the passenger pigeon experiencing its steepest decline decades before the chestnut blight hit north america at all.

“It was then that the authors of all this devastation began their entry amongst the dead, the dying, and the mangled. The Pigeons were picked up and piled in heaps, until each had as many as he could possibly dispose of, when the hogs were let loose to feed on the remainder.

Persons unacquainted with these birds might naturally conclude that such dreadful havoc would soon put an end to the species. But I have satisfied myself, by long observation, that nothing but the gradual diminution of our forests can accomplish their decrease...”
